Apple season is in full swing and as they say...“an apple a day, keeps the doctor away!” "THEY" seemed to have a lot knowledge we have decided to "forget" in these crazy times....so let me remind you again about the AMAZING benefits that apples can have for our health!!!
Miller’s Amish Eco Farm has some wonderful apple products for us this fall, so let me remind you of some apple facts in this HFC Store, so you are able to take advantage of the benefits this powerful fruit has to offer.
Health Benefits of Apples
Apples are filled with soluble fiber (5 grams). This fiber has been shown to reduce intestinal disorders, including diverticulitis, hemorrhoids and possibly some types of cancer. It helps control insulin levels by releasing sugar slowly into the bloodstream.
It cleanses and detoxifies, which helps eliminate heavy metals, such as lead and mercury. Apples are packed with vitamins C, A, and flavonoids and with smaller amounts of phosphorus, iron and calcium. Apples provide a source of potassium which may promote heart health.
Bone Protection - a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.
Asthma Help - recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples.
Colon Cancer - rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.
Liver Cancer - research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.
Alzheimer's Prevention - a study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer's disease.
Diabetes Management - The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body's need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.
Whether you choose to eat it as a fruit, applesauce, drink as apple juice or as apple cider vinegar, we cannot overstate the benefits of apples. It is a tasty and satisfying nutritious snack and honestly, who can resist the smell of freshly picked apples simmering on the stove? Apple sauce is not only comfort food, but it's also surprisingly healthy and nutritious.
As we have mentioned above, apples are a good source of vitamin C and natural fiber. When choosing applesauce, look for one that's organic with no added sugar to maximize health benefits. If you make your own at home, use the apples unpeeled so you can benefit from the additional flavonoids found in apple peels. Enjoy!
Chia Apple SauceYields: 2 cups3 medium to large apples, chopped2 Tbsp of chia seeds4 dates, soaked1/4 cup of date water soaking the datesCinnamon for sprinkling on top- Place the dates in just enough water to cover them and soak for 30 minutes or longer- until nice and soft.- Throw the dates, 1/4 cup of the date water, and 2 Tbsp of chia seeds in your high powdered blender.- Add the chopped apples to the date mixture and blend until smooth. You could also leave it chunky and just pulsate it as well.- Place in the fridge for 30 minutes, so the chia seeds soften and plump up the apple sauce.I am sure you could freeze it, if you wanted to, but I don’t think you will have any left after you taste it.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Organic and raw, the apple cider vinegar we carry is not pasteurized and has undergone a fermentation process that retains the nutrients from the apples themselves and gives the substance additional enzymes and beneficial bacteria (which you may see as a sediment-like substance floating on the bottom of the jar).
If you’ve got a good bottle of apple cider vinegar, you should see some strand-like sediment floating at the bottom. No, your vinegar hasn’t gone bad—that gunky-looking stuff at the bottom is the most important part! It’s called “the mother,” and it contains raw enzymes and gut-friendly bacteria that promote healing. This differs greatly from the clear, distilled vinegar or other types of non-raw, non-organic apple cider vinegar you might find at a larger, conventional grocery store. These distilled, filtered vinegars contain no beneficial bacteria or enzymes and can be detrimental to your health if ingested.
Apple cider vinegar contains high levels of potassium, calcium, pectin, malic acid, acetic acid, and many other nutrients that can accomplish great things for the body, including:
- Supporting strong bones and teeth.
- Regulating blood pressure and lowering bad cholesterol levels.
- Improving digestion.
- Detoxifying the body of diseased cells.
- Detoxifying the lymphatic system.
- Assisting the body in maintaining a pH balance.
Potassium, magnesium and other minerals are present in apple cider vinegar. Potassium controls the water balance in the body and maintains a healthy heart rhythm. Magnesium is a catalyst in enzyme activity, helping digestion and assisting in the uptake of calcium to form healthy bones.
However, some individuals exhibit an allergy to pectin and should therefore avoid apple cider vinegar.
Lowers Glucose - Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which can slow down starch digestion, consequently lowering glucose levels in the bloodstream, according to an article published by the American Diabetes Society in January 2004 called "Vinegar Improves Insulin Sensitivity to a High-Carbohydrate Meal in Subjects With Insulin Resistance or Type 2 Diabetes."
Helps Osteoarthritis - Osteoarthritis is cause by acid crystal buildup in the body, and apple cider vinegar can disperse these buildups by balancing the body's pH, says Dr. Deforrest Clinton Jarvis in his book "Folk Medicine: A Vermont Doctor's Guide to Good Health." There is still no substantial scientific evidence for this claim, but Dr. Jarvis lists successful cases of patients recovering from osteoarthritis under his care with apple cider vinegar.
Antioxidant Activity - Apple cider vinegar contains beta-carotene, which according to the Mayo Clinic possesses antioxidant properties that counteract damage caused by free radicals and that boost your immune system.
Antifungal Properties - The fungus Malassezia furfur, which causes dandruff, is eradicated by the antifungal properties of apple cider vinegar. A solution of 50 percent water and 50 percent apple cider vinegar should be applied to the scalp and left to dry without rinsing until dandruff is gone.
Yeast Infection Remedy - Apple cider vinegar reduces yeast infections in women by adding 2 tbsp. of the vinegar to a douche. Not all women react positively to this remedy, and it should be taken with caution.
Anti-Inflammatory - The anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar work to soothe the effects of sunburned skin when added to a bath. It can also help internal inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract when added to salads or taken diluted with water. This by extension will also reduce cholesterol levels.
Weight Loss Aid - By helping balance blood sugar levels, apple cider vinegar also assists in weight loss, since insulin will not direct sugar to be stored as fat.
Skin Toner - apple cider vinegar is astringent, which helps with toning the skin, especially on the face and neck. Clears blemishes and soothes skin issues. Use a 1:1 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Wash your face, and then simply splash your face with the mixture. Avoid getting it in the eyes, as it may cause irritation.
Remedy for heartburn- mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with about four ounces of water and take as a natural remedy for heartburn.
Detoxifying drink - drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar per day (plain or mixed with water) to restore energy, improve digestion, and as an agent for detoxification within the body. As a weight loss aid. Drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water following a meal. This discourages the body from storing fat cells.
Improve regularity - drink an apple cider vinegar mixture (one or two tablespoons to eight ounces of water) each day to improve bowel regularity and stimulate digestion.
Organic raw apple cider vinegar is very strong. Dilute your drink or solution as necessary in order to create a more palatable experience.
And, of course, apple cider vinegar is a classic salad dressing ingredient, which you can definitely get a little creative with!
Raw Apple Cider from Miller’s Amish Eco FarmFresh cider is raw apple juice that has not undergone a filtration process to remove coarse particles of pulp or sediment. To make fresh cider, apples are washed, cut and ground into a mash that is the consistency of applesauce. Layers of mash are wrapped in cloth, and put into wooded racks. A hydraulic press squeezes the layers, and the juice flows into refrigerated tanks. This juice is bottled as apple cider. Some of you may have had the pleasure of tasting Amos' Apple Cider at the Miami delivery station, for those who have not tried, we suggest you mix it with milk. It really makes for a delicious and nutritious treat.Cider needs constant refrigeration because it is perishable. It will stay sweet and unfermented for up to two weeks. Cider can also be frozen, but be sure to pour off an inch or two from the container for expansion during freezing.
So there you have it ... lots of good reasons why it is good for you to eat an apple a day!
